Upgrading Equipment: Texas Business Financing and Tax Benefits

Texas Business Grants Research Team

Equipment upgrades are essential for Texas businesses to maintain competitiveness, improve productivity, and meet evolving industry standards. Government programs can significantly reduce the net cost of equipment purchases through immediate tax deductions, government-backed financing, and in some cases direct grants.

Section 179 Deduction

Section 179 allows businesses to immediately expense the full cost of qualifying equipment in the year of purchase rather than depreciating it over several years. The deduction applies to machinery, vehicles, computers, software, office furniture, and other tangible business property. Equipment funding guide.

Bonus Depreciation

In addition to Section 179, bonus depreciation allows first-year depreciation deductions on qualifying new and used equipment. This provides additional tax benefit beyond Section 179 limits for businesses making large equipment investments.

SBA 504 Loans

SBA 504 loans provide below-market fixed-rate financing for major equipment purchases with just 10% down and terms up to 10 or 20 years. This is one of the most favorable financing options available for significant equipment investments. SBA 504 guide.

SBA 7(a) Loans

SBA 7(a) loans up to $5 million can finance equipment purchases with longer repayment terms and lower down payments than conventional bank loans.

TCEQ Emissions Grants

Businesses replacing older diesel-powered equipment with cleaner alternatives can apply for TERP grants that cover a portion of the replacement cost. Qualifying equipment includes trucks, generators, construction equipment, and other diesel-powered machinery.

USDA REAP for Energy Equipment

Rural businesses purchasing energy-efficient equipment can access REAP grants covering up to 40% of project costs.

Manufacturing Sales Tax Exemption

Texas manufacturers purchasing production equipment are exempt from sales tax on qualifying machinery and equipment used directly in the manufacturing process. Manufacturing exemptions guide.
