SCORE vs. SBDC in Texas: Which Free Business Resource Is Better?

Texas Business Grants Research Team

SCORE and Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) are both free business support programs available to Texas entrepreneurs, but they operate differently and serve somewhat different needs. Understanding the distinction helps you choose the right resource or use both effectively.

What Is SCORE?

SCORE is a nonprofit organization partnered with the SBA that provides free business mentoring. SCORE mentors are experienced business professionals, many of them retired executives and entrepreneurs, who volunteer their time to advise small business owners.

SCORE Services

  • One-on-one mentoring (in person and virtual)
  • Industry-specific guidance from experienced professionals
  • Business plan review and development
  • Marketing and strategy advice
  • Free workshops and webinars
  • Ongoing mentoring relationships (not just one session)

SCORE Texas Chapters

Texas has SCORE chapters in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso, and other cities. Mentoring is available both in person and online.

What Is an SBDC?

SBDCs are funded by the SBA and hosted by universities and colleges. They provide free business consulting and training through professional staff who specialize in small business advising. The Texas SBDC Network is one of the largest in the country.

SBDC Services

  • Business consulting (financial analysis, feasibility studies, market research)
  • Business plan development
  • Loan packaging and financial projections
  • Government contracting assistance
  • Technology commercialization support
  • International trade assistance
  • Training workshops and courses

Texas SBDC Locations

The Texas SBDC Network includes centers hosted by universities across the state, including UT San Antonio, UT Dallas, University of Houston, Texas State, and others. Most centers serve multi-county regions.

Key Differences

Staff vs. Volunteers

  • SCORE: Volunteer mentors (experienced business professionals)
  • SBDC: Professional staff consultants (full-time advisors)

Approach

  • SCORE: Mentoring-based. Focuses on advice and guidance from personal experience
  • SBDC: Consulting-based. Focuses on research, analysis, and technical assistance

Specialization

  • SCORE: Industry-matched mentors with specific business experience
  • SBDC: Technical specialization in financial analysis, market research, government contracting, and international trade

Which Is Better?

Neither is universally better. They complement each other:

  • Use SCORE when you want ongoing mentoring from someone who has run a similar business
  • Use SBDC when you need technical analysis, financial projections, loan packaging, or government contracting guidance
  • Use both when you are launching or growing a business and want comprehensive support
