Registered Apprenticeship Tax Benefits for Texas Employers

Texas Business Grants Research Team

Registered Apprenticeship programs provide structured on-the-job training combined with classroom instruction, allowing employers to develop skilled workers while potentially accessing federal and state tax benefits. Texas employers in skilled trades, manufacturing, healthcare, and technology may benefit from establishing or participating in registered apprenticeship programs.

Federal Tax Benefits

While there is no standalone federal apprenticeship tax credit at this time, employers may access several existing tax benefits. WOTC tax credits may apply when apprentices come from eligible target groups. Employer-paid training costs are generally deductible as ordinary business expenses. Equipment used for training may qualify for Section 179 deductions.

Texas Workforce Commission Apprenticeship Support

The Texas Workforce Commission supports registered apprenticeship through program registration, technical assistance, and connections to Skills Development Fund training grants. TWC can help employers design apprenticeship programs that meet Department of Labor registration requirements.

Benefits for Texas Employers

  • Customized training: Apprenticeship programs are designed to match your specific skill requirements
  • Employee retention: Apprentices who complete programs show significantly higher retention rates
  • Skills Development Fund: Classroom training components may qualify for TWC training grants
  • WOTC stacking: Qualifying apprentices may also generate WOTC tax credits

High-Demand Texas Apprenticeship Occupations

Texas registered apprenticeships are available in construction trades, manufacturing, healthcare, IT, and many other occupations. The construction industry is the largest user of apprenticeship in Texas, but growing programs exist in healthcare, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing.

How to Start an Apprenticeship Program

Contact the Texas Workforce Commission Apprenticeship Division to discuss program registration. TWC provides technical assistance to help employers develop program standards, identify training partners, and register with the U.S. Department of Labor.
